FURIO DI CASTRI , born in Milano, september 12, 1955.
He went to music at 11 years old, playing the trumpet. Move to the electric bass at age 13. Formerly he is a self-taught musician, beginning to play with rhythm and blues and progressive rock bands.
He recorded his first album in 1973 (Dedalus, Trident records) then started with the double bass.
In 1978 he moved to Rome, where he started to play with tenor saxophonist Maurizio Giammarco and with altoist Massimo Urbani. In Rome he met Chet Baker, with whom he would have kept playing on and off since 1988. In the same period he also became very active in Milan, playing with Larry Nocella, Luigi Bonafede and Franco d'Andrea, and sitting in with musicians as Walter Davis jr, Jimmy Knepper, Freddie Hubbard, Art Farmer. During february 1981 he entered Enrico Rava's band (with Franco d'Andrea and Aldo Romano) and, a few months later, the first trio of Michel Petrucciani.
From 1981 until now, he has played together with some of the greatest soloist in the European scene - such as Richard Galliano, Dino Saluzzi, Antonello Salis, Joe Lovano, Charles Lloyd, Steve Lacy, John Surman, Dave Liebman, Pharoah Sanders, Michael Brecker, Sal Nistico, Lee Konitz, Joe Henderson, Franco Ambrosetti, Kenny Wheeler, Charles Tolliver, Ray Anderson, Muhal Richard Abrams, Michel Grailler, Gordon Beck, Franco d'Andrea, John Taylor, Paul Bley, Don Friedman, Enrico Pieranunzi, Rita Marcotulli, Jon Balke, Stan Tracey, John Abercrombie, Philip Catherine, Paul Motian, Tony Oxley, Barry Altschul, Daniel Humair, Jon Christensen, Joe La Barbera, Bruce Ditmas, André Ceccarelli.
Furio started writing music and leading his own bands in 1986, mainly Trios or Quartets. In 1989 has been selected among the best new european talents at the New Jazz Meeting in Baden-Baden, held by the German Radio-Tv (Sudwestfunk).
In 1990 he started to perform with trumpetist Paolo Fresu. Together they recorded over 12 CD and played all over France, Germany, Switzerland, Spain, Portugal, Israel, Usa, Argentina, Brazil, China. The duo-project eventually enlarged with the coming of John Taylor (piano), Naco (percussion), Jon Balke (piano) and Pierre Favre (percussion). Since 1995 they perform regularly in a trio with pianist and accordeonist Antonello Salis.
Since 1997 he performs with Wooden You - an acoustic trio with Mauro Negri, clarinet, and Andrea Dulbecco, marimba - and compose music for Theatre and Dance (Teatro Settimo e Gabriele Vacis, Teatro di Dioniso e Walter Malosti, Ente teatrale di Nuoro, Scuola Holden-Torino, Sosta Palmizi).
In 2000 he has led WELCOME, a workshop sponsored by the Biannual on Young Artist of the Mediterranean with young musicians from Sicily, Croatia, Bosnia, Greece and Palestina. This workshop mixed the sound of traditional instruments like oud, darbouka, tabla and accordeon with the sound of classic instruments (cellos, basses, piano, drums and horns) and performed in Turin, Gaza and Sarajevo.
In 2001 he formed OUTLINE, a quintet with Eric Vloeimans, Gianluca Petrella, Bojan Zulfikarpasic e Joel Allouche.
